The Jammu and Kashmir government has cleared issuance of short-duration passport to Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the file has been sent to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) since the separatist leader falls in ‘Prior Approval Category’, officials said Sunday.

Mirwaiz had applied for passport renewal in January 2013 after the validity of his travel document ended. Since then, the government didn’t issue passport to him.

“We have received the file (pertaining to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s passport). It has been cleared by the Jammu and Kashmir government,” an official at Regional Passport Office told Greater Kashmir. “The file has been sent to MEA for approval.”

The official said Mirwaiz along with some top-rung separatist leaders falls in Prior Approval Category. “We are hopeful that file will be returned in minimum possible time. Once the file is approved, Mirwaiz will get the passport having two-year validity.”

Official sources said the J&K government has recommended to the MEA to clear Mirwaiz Umar’s passport.

Officials at Regional Passport Office said since January 2013, they have received many reminders from Mirwaiz about his passport.

Pertinently, Mirwaiz will not be able to attend Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meet in New York this month due to lack of passport.
