“How We Were Attacked”, Rameez recalls the horror Story.

Rameez Ahmad Bhat,  a trucker who survived the murderous attack by a violent mob in Shiv Nagar area of Udhampur district on October 9—in which two of his colleagues were burnt alive—says the assailants stopped their vehicle and instantly set it on fire with a petrol bomb.

“I can never forget that day,” he told on Monday.
He said they loaded their truck with fruit in Srinagar and unloaded it in Agra. On their way back, Bhat says, “we loaded potatoes in the vehicle and unloaded the truck at Pathankote where we again loaded the truck with coal blocks for transportation to Srinagar.

“When we reached Shiv Nagar Udhampur, we were attacked by a violent mob armed with lathis and stones. On finding our truck from Kashmir bearing number JK03-D 1142, some of them shouted repeatedly ‘It’s is a Kashmiri truck. Set it on fire. Set it on fire’. They shouted ‘Jai Hind and Har Har Mahadev’ slogans and hurled  petrol bombs towards us,” Bhat recounts amid sobs. “Our vehicle instantly caught fire. Though I was myself driving the truck, I somehow managed to jump from the other side as the vehicle rammed into an electric pole.”
“It was a miraculous escape for me,” he says.
He says his colleagues Showket and Zahid were in flames after the murderous attack. “As the mob moved away, I saw Showket and Zahid in flames and tried to douse the fire with water from a nearby pond. In the meantime, police reached the spot and took them to a nearby hospital. Showket’s legs and arms had burn injuries while Zahid had burn marks all over his body. They were writhing in pain,” he says.
Bhat says he was frightened but somehow mustered courage to call his friends.
“In Delhi hospital, he (Zahid) was eager to reach home and see his mother,” Bhat says.
“I cannot believe my eyes that he is no more. The scene of his burning alive will haunt me forever.”
Zahid passed away on Sunday while Showket is undergoing treatment at Safderjung hospital.
