The series will be a celebration of Sri Lanka’s 70th year of Independence.
SLC is hoping huge financial gains from the series after India confirmed their participation for the competition.
According to The Island, “An ODI involving the Indian team fetches around US$ 2 million in terms of television revenue and assuming that India go all the way to the final, SLC could earn a minimum of US$ 8 million from the Indian games alone. The prospect of India playing bitter political rivals Pakistan will be a double bonus.”
Thilanga Sumathipala, SLC Chief told the reporters on 20 January, “India has already given their willingness to play the Independence Cup in 2018 in Sri Lanka after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe discussed this with Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi recently.”
As per British Rule, 2017 is the 70th anniversary of Indian independence and thus the invitation from Sri Lanka is considered to be an extended part of the same celebration.
India and Sri Lanka are set to play three Test matches as well as limited-overs matches in August 2017 before the Independence Cup.
